By A U Asif

New Delhi, November 7 Dr. Muneer Fareed has succeeded Dr. Sayyid M. Syeed as the Secretary General of the 43-year old well known American Muslim organization, Islamic Society of North America (ISNA). According to reports reaching here, Dr Fareed was chosen as the new Secretary General after an eight-month search. He took charge on November 1, 2006 at the ISNA headquarters in Plainfield, IN.

Dr. Muneer Fareed has been trained in both traditional Islamic and American academic settings. After studying in South Africa, Saudi Arabia and India, he earned a Ph D in Islamic Studies from the University of Michigan. Later, he served as an Imam in a mosque in South Africa and in academia in Michigan.

As one of the founders and core scholars of the ALIM Program, a successful program in "Islamic literacy" for Muslim high school seniors and college students, Dr Fareed has earned a very good reputation in the USA.

ISNA is an association of Muslim organizations and individuals that provides a common platform for presenting Islam, supporting Muslim communities, developing educational, social and outreach programs and fostering good relations with other religious communities, and civic and service organizations. Its one of the objectives has been to bridge gap between Muslim community and the American society at large. It holds its annual convention every year at Chicago. It is participated by about 40,000 American Muslims belonging to different walks of life.

This scribe has got an opportunity to participate in its annual conference in 2003. It was, in fact, a festival-like event, participated by the American Muslims from each and every part of the USA.

ISNA is presently headed by Dr Ms Ingrid Mattson. Elected on August 23, 2006 as the first female President of the largest religious organization, representing Muslims in North America, Dr Ms Mattson earlier also served as the first female ISNA Vice President. She is Professor of Islamic Studies and Director of Islamic Chaplaincy at the Macdonald Center for Islamic Studies and Christian-Muslim Relations at Hartford Seminary in Hartford, CT. Dr Ms. Mattson, born in Canada, studied Philosophy at the University of Waterloo, Ontario (B.A. '87) and earned her Ph.D. in Islamic Studies from the University of Chicago in 1999.

Dr Ms. Mattson has numerous publications exploring the relationship between Islamic law and society as well as gender and leadership issues in Muslim communities. Her forthcoming book, "The Qur'an: Its History and Place in Muslim Societies", is being published by Blackwell Press. Dr Ms.Mattson lives in Connecticut with her husband and two children. In August last Imam Mohammed Ibn Hagmagid, popularly known as Imam Magid, was also elected as the organization's Vice-President. Imam Magid is the Executive Director and Imam of the All Dulles Area Muslim Society.

Dr. Sayyid M. Syeed, who served as the Secretary General of ISNA for 12 years, has now taken over as the National Director of Interfaith and Community Alliances, ISNA at Washington, DC.

While appreciating the significant role played by Dr Sayyid M. Syeed in consolidating the roots of ISNA for 12 years, Dr Mohammed Manzoor Alam, Chairman, Institute of Objective Studies (IOS), New Delhi has greeted Dr Muneer Fareed as the new Secretary General of ISNA and wished him success in consolidating and expanding further the work of the organization.
